Sheriff
The Office of the Sheriff is a full service law enforcement agency functioning 24-7. The office is responsible for providing security for the courts and its eight judges. The Sheriff has created a Junior Deputy Program to expose students to the risks of breaking the law. The office provides the D.A.R.E. program in the Scranton schools to teach students the dangers of drug abuse.
Duties of the Sheriff
- To enforce all orders of the Lackawanna County Court of Common Pleas
- To serve bench warrants, civil writs and protection from abuse orders
- To conduct levies, sales of personal property and real estate
- To provide security and protection for court related functions and all county facilities
- To transport prisoners to and from county, state and federal institutions for court appearances
- To arrest violators of the law and fugitives
- To assist other law-enforcement agencies in the county
- To assist in special law-enforcement efforts such as Central Booking, DUI roving and saturations patrols and community events
- To issue Pennsylvania License to Carry Firearms and licenses to sell firearms
